A Derby is characterized by quarters with shoelace eyelets that are sewn on top of the vamp. The Derby construction method is also known as open lacing. The Derby became a popular for sporting and hunting in the 1850’s. But by the turn of the 20th century, the Derby became more elegant and quickly gained popularity as stylish dressed shoe. Still the derby is a bit more casual than the oxford but both the oxford and the derby are considered to be formal wear.
